This was the first workshop in the 7 month project, which will develop a mobile/local food growing system that will be managed by the immigrant community in Jackson Heights, and eventually moved to the Hall of Science in Queens.

Finally posted a project description/musing on the Grand Central listening experiment! Take a look at it here.

We are looking to plan another Group Listening Alone meeting for the spring. Let us know if you have any ideas about places and pieces to pair up.

For those interested in spaces and sounds, we’ll be holding a listening experiment in the Main Concourse at Grand Central Terminal Friday, December 10th, at 7pm. A group of us will listen to Steve Reich’s seminal piece Music for 18 Musicians at the same time on our ipods, phones, whatevers while wandering/observing/experiencing this iconic space. The experience looks to examine parallels in micro and macro aspects of the piece and the place. Also, through simultaneously listening to the same piece in our own earbud worlds, we will be exploring tensions surrounding the creation of a personal identity in a social space.

The only thing you have to do is get ahold of an mp3 of Music for 18 Musicians (email us if you are interested and maybe we can figure something out). The piece is 57 minutes long so be prepared!

We will meet at the info kiosk in the center of the hall at 7.

DoTank:Brooklyn wrapped-up its participation in the Golden Blueprints show at WG Gallery in Greenpoint. Thanks to the organizers for getting us involved!

The show’s theme asked local artists to envision and present plans for improvements of the neighborhood. While adressing the theme of the show, DoTank presented the results of actually doing something to improve the neighborhood: ’chairbombing’ in the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn. Both a video and an artifact were presented.

DoTank:Brooklyn organized and hosted an Urban Agriculture Skillshare at the Change You Want to See Gallery on June 5 2010.

This event was focused on getting our hands dirty by sharing urban agriculture skills with the community to teach methods of physical action. Three activities were covered: Vermiculture (indoor worm composting), Windowfarming (indoor Do-It-Yourself hydroponic farming) and Seedbombing (guerilla beautification of abandoned lots). Carina Molnar from CUNY Institute for Sustainable Cities partnered with DoTank:Brooklyn to make the event a success.

A unique and enveloping soundtrack was generated through a fundamental element of the urban fabric. 6 drummers played two fire escapes on E. 7th as instruments. Performers were positioned on two levels of the exterior of the building. Utilizing interlocking patterns, Fire Escapes accentuated the dynamic spatial characteristics of the vertically positioned ensemble. Fire Escapes was cyclical, patient, kinetic, and bombastic.

Video by Aurash Khawarzad

The project expands on the existing exploration of New York residents into how fire escapes can serve everyday social purposes beyond their intended function. Currently, fire escapes become terraces, reading rooms, and sunbathing decks. Fire Escapes redefines these structures as performance spaces. Also, the spatial relationship between performer and audience reconfigures pedestrians’ relationship to the street. By looking up, urban dwellers are offered a new, participatory perspective on the built environment.

The event took place at Washington and Park Ave., near the Brooklyn Navy Yard. The Brooklyn Navy Yard was the source for all the pallets used in the project.

DoTank:Brooklyn led the construction of one 40 foot table and 5 chairs made from used shipping pallets. Thanks to all the volunteers who helped build over the past few weekends!

B.Y.O. at the B.Q.E.

Video by Aurash Khawarzad

BYO at the BQE, which stands for Bring Your Own at the Brooklyn Queens Expressway, was a catalytic event for the purpose of transforming the underutilized public space underneath the BQE in Clinton Hill, Brooklyn, into a community-serving space that is vibrant, sustainable, and one-of-a-kind.

DoTank:Brooklyn worked with Design Trust for Public Space, Myrtle Avenue Brooklyn Partnership, Transportation Alternatives, and Architecture for Humanity, among others, to create the vision and hold the nighttime event, which also served as the location for post Park(ing) Day celebration for New York City. The event was a community potluck that featured a 50’ long dinner table that was created by repurposing shipping pallets that had been discarded at the nearby Brooklyn Navy Yard.

The shipping pallet table and potluck provided a forum for community-members, local businesses, and activists to gather and discuss how the space can be transformed from being a physical and social barrier for Ft. Greene and Clinton Hill, into a place where people can comfortably gather and share constructive experiences. The methods by which the table was constructed – upcycling – also demonstrate how local resources can be leveraged to improve public space with a small ecological footprint.

DoTank:Brooklyn will continue to work with community members and local groups to implement the creative ideas and passion that they have for improving this significant place.
